Part I - The Via Alpina Start: From Vaduz to Altdorf

The Via Alpina - once across Switzerland

Experience the fascination of the Via Alpina, one of the most famous long-distance hiking trails, which stretches from Vaduz in the east to Montreux on Lake Geneva in the west of Switzerland. This marked hiking route no. 1 leads over 14 Alpine passes, covering around 400 km through the Swiss countryside in around 20 stages.

The Via Alpina not only offers breathtaking views of the mountains and nature, but also provides a multifaceted insight into the country's rich tradition, culture and history.

The Via Alpina Switzerland is divided into three sections:

  1. The eastern start section begins in Vaduz and ends in Altdorf
  2. The central heart section stretches from Altdorf to Kandersteg
  3. The western final section then leads from Kandersteg to the finish in Montreux

The Via Alpina Switzerland is connected to the International Via Alpina Trail, which stretches over 5000 km from the Adriatic Sea through the entire Alpine arc and through eight countries to Monaco.

Discover the start of the Via Alpina

Via Alpina stages 1 to 6 from eastern to central Switzerland!

The first part of the Via Alpina leads from Vaduz over a little-known, sometimes lonely stretch of land to Glarnerland and Altdorf. The mountains and nature are all the more fascinating and, in addition to the views, exciting insights await you from day to day.

From the Liechtenstein capital of Vaduz, where the Prince still sits enthroned in the castle high above the town, the Via Alpina starts through the Rhine Valley to Sargans. Here, however, the lord of the castle has long since moved out. The route now leads into the long Weisstannental valley, past the Isengrind waterfall, one of the highest waterfalls in Switzerland, and on over the Foo and Richtelipass into Glarnerland. The two lonely crossings lead through a wild mountain region and are a first Via Alpina hiking highlight. The UNESCO World Heritage Tectonic Arena Sardona is impressive. The view of the main thrust fault, which was formed during the folding of the mountains, provides both a deep insight into the history of the earth and a view through it. Namely through the Martinsloch, through which the sun sends its rays precisely onto the church of Elm once in spring and once in fall.
