Safely on the trail. What conditions are important for a safe snowshoe hike?

Snowshoeing offers a wonderful opportunity to be active outdoors in winter and to be out and about in nature away from the hustle and bustle of the ski slopes. There are a few points to consider to ensure that the experience is a real pleasure.

Technical and physical requirements

Snowshoe tours in Switzerland are classified according to six different levels of difficulty, from easy to challenging (WT1 to WT6). This classification takes into account both technical and physical aspects. The physical requirements describe the necessary fitness level of a tour, including the average walking times and altitude meters in ascent and descent. The technical grade refers to the difficulty of the route, from wide hiking trails to exposed passages in steep terrain.

Tour planning and experience

It is important to plan a snowshoe hike in advance. Choose a route that suits your own abilities and experience. In addition to the walking times, distance and vertical meters in ascent and descent, take into account the weather conditions and especially the current avalanche bulletin for the region you want to visit.

Judging the weather and avalanche situation requires a lot of experience. We therefore strongly recommend that people who want to start snowshoeing join an experienced guide who will accompany and support them safely.

The snowshoe equipment

It is important that you tackle a snowshoe hike with the right equipment.

Wear functional hiking clothing in several layers, from long thermal underwear to winter hiking trousers and a fleece jacket as well as a wind and weatherproof jacket and trousers. Mountain or winter hiking boots with gaiters provide good protection against snow and cold. Pack some snacks and warm tea in your rucksack and bear in mind that your cell phone battery runs out more quickly in the cold. A power bank can therefore come in useful.

Emergency equipment, consisting of an avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel, is essential for hikes away from controlled paths and routes. It is essential to practise using the emergency equipment.

And last but not least, good quality snowshoes offer an easy-to-use binding with crampons and climbing aid as well as side teeth for additional grip in hard snow conditions.

For the safety of our guests, emergency equipment is provided free of charge on all out & ABOUT - Switzerland Trekking offers and explained by our guides.
