Day 1 Take the 130-year-old cog railway to the summit of Monte Generoso. Back in the Belle Époque era, as today, the summit captivated visitors with its incredible panoramic views. The mountain now boasts another attraction in the form of Fiore di Pietra, Mario Botta's impressive stone flower. Enjoy the 360° panorama from the Eastern to the Western Alps and far into the Italian Po Valley. Then take a leisurely hike from Bellavista through forests and across meadows to Scudellate. Despite depopulation, this mountain village has an exciting project: an Albergo Diffuso. Various accommodation options are scattered throughout the village. These include a beautiful panoramic lodge in an old Ticino house, which has been lovingly renovated with great attention to detail. A typical local dish at the Osteria Manciana rounds off the day.
Day 2 Starting directly from the hotel, the trail leads past a roccoli, a bird-catching tower, and along smugglers' paths across the border to Italy. At the border post, old stories of the cat-and-mouse game between the carabinieri and contrabandiere are refreshed. In the nearby village of Cabbio, next to a graa, a typical chestnut smoking house, stands the Casa Cotoni. It is one of the most important buildings in the valley and now houses the Museo Etnografico, which introduces visitors to the special world of the Valle di Muggio. On the terrace of the Osteria Manciana, from where the view sweeps out over the valley, the afternoon comes to an end with a sip of white wine and a piece of Zincarlin, the region's special cheese.
Day 3 Muggio is the main town in the valley. The name of the village means “heap” and is probably based on the appearance of the village, whose houses are clustered together like a heap of stones on the hillside. From here, a path leads along the cool waters of the Breggia river to the Bruzella mill. It rattles and creaks, the water wheel starts turning, and the mill begins to grind Rosso del Ticino, the typical red corn, just as it did a few hundred years ago. At the end of your trip to southern Ticino, you cycle through the vineyards at the mouth of the valley. Of course, a stop at the cantina is a must, where you can listen to the winemakers' stories about their Merlot and enjoy a sip to try.
